Gone are the days...

Gone are the days the atomic structure could walk freely. What's it mean? I don't know... This one literally just kinda popped in my head; color, style, and all. But, more interaction between loose digital ink lines and clean vectors. Also using the 2/3rds rule, balancing the negative space above. A bit of illustration and graphic design.

The birth of a thought.

This is an older digital work I did back around 2017 or so. I always liked this one and the simple loose style. Actually, this may even be a bit older now that I think about it, It was done on my old first generation iPad with some free paint software I downloaded. Pulled it back up on the computer today and added a little digital noise to break up the flatness. Love the thick round loose black line work.

The all-seeing eye box.

The all-seeing eye box. It knows all, it sees all. Something fun while of course just messing around. No filters, no unique brushes, no added distress that I usually like to do, just kept this one as simple and clean as possible. Digital with just a couple of dry brush weights.

You are in some sort of flux.

You are in some sort of flux. Something that constantly changes. Feel like I'm in a major flux now. Digital scribble done in Photoshop, using mainly stock flat brushes.

Petals

Petals. Still life with flying insect. More Photoshop fun! Drew this bug a couple of times, clipped this one from another art piece I did. Not sure what kind of bug it is; but it has wings, so it flies.

Linear talk at the water cooler

You never know where you'll be, standing around, or at the water cooler; when suddenly, your hit with an epiphany, or life altering thought... I kept the original first rough sketch in this finished piece, or as finished as it's gonna get. I like it, adds to the texture and looseness to it. As always, I'm going to play around with it some more.

GO - ride or die, you are born to fly

GO - ride or die, you are born to fly... and other positive stuff. I think I just start scribbling, like with this skull; and I'm not sure where I want to go with it, so I just start adding stuff. Played with this one a couple time just layering elements and textures over each other. Kinda like how the "go" button in black balances all the crap on the right side. I wonder if people will try to click it? 😁

Love + Death are gumball machine toys.

Finally had a day to sit and scribble, first day in a long time. It's fast and loose, but I like how it turned out, and I had fun!
My reference was a toy squirrel; but, I think love and death are a bit more interesting. Done in Photoshop. Maybe put this on a shirt?

Ultra bunny love

Another nightly urge to make some art, no idea of what to do. Started playing with a dark background and more of a wet brush to give some wobbly loose edges. Drew a couple of things in light colors and then this pink circle, turned it into a head, and this image was born. Tried not to over think this too much, just made myself keep going and see what comes out, just having fun... and what would happen if I painted over it more and played with layer filters. Above is the outcome. Any thoughts from the world wide web?

It's in the soil

Spent a few hours the last two nights playing around with this one in Photoshop. The flower pattern was done in Illustrator and then I copied and pasted it in. Lately I have been experimenting with using clean vector graphics in contrast with very loose digitally painted elements; gonna keep messing with this as well as the distressed touches. Also playing with layer color filters, First and last photo.

420 Adventure

Not one of my better artworks, but had it lying around from about 2020 and never posted it. But here it is on 420... 2024. Added a motion blur filter last minute from one of the social sites and thought it worked well considering the topic!

Mood??

Mood? I don't know what to call this? Also I'm learning and thinking more about how naming a piece of art can and may influence an audience to preconceive a feeling or thought as to what the message or meaning of the art is? I like the idea of the viewer forming their own option as to what they feel the art is saying. I had a friend look at it online and he said, "Hot and Cold". Not at all what I was thinking, but I'll buy that!

Trash Talk

Bought some new markers and a scribble pad at the Dollar store, was testing the markers on the pad and this image came out (second photo). Just a random sketch, but I like it. Brought it into Photoshop and turned it into digital graffiti (first photo). Enjoy!

You disappoint me rat.

Did this one last night, this was a lot of fun. Just looked over at my cat and this image started giving birth in my head. Hated it at first when I started with the cat's head, but keep on with it and I think it turned out pretty cool. It's the art you start and don't like that you end up loving if you keep going.

March '24 art dump

A few more random, quick & experimental pieces of this month of March. Second from the top is an old piece but I just messed with the colors and contrast a bit to see how it would play on social media.
1. "Window from a dream" Digital/Photoshop. I love how this one turned out, this was actually inspired from a dream I had as a kid. I wanna do some prints of this one. 2. "This ain't what I ordered" Hand drawn, an older work. 3. "Life plan Vol. 1" Digital/Photoshop. I like the individual elements, but don't like how it turned out overall. 4. "When I throw my sweat pants on the floor, they look at me" Digital/Photoshop. Happy with it but wish I would have used some different more contrasting colors. I saw it in my head in these colors.

Flock

A little thumbnail sketch from a long time ago just hanging out waiting to do something more with. Finally got around to doing a tighter Photoshop digital painting of this sketch. It's not a very big file but I would like to do a risoprint small run of this at some point. Four colors.

Endure & Live

One of my most favorite places on earth is downtown Frankenmuth, Michigan. It's a small little antique German Bavarian tourist spot; very quaint, very cheesy, but to me, very relaxing. I don't know why, I'm a dork... Frankenmuth is about an hour away from where I live and I will go there about once a year with the family. Every time we visit, we always eat at Zehnder's Restaurant. Well, over the years going with my kids, nieces & nephews; they would always order the children's ice cream for desert, which would come with a beautiful little vibrant colored plastic animal (as seen above in the third picture). Well, from many visits over the years, I have quite the collection of the little critters, and I love them. For some weird reason, they are all animals and then mermaids (of course my favorite, duh!). Anyway, not to drag this out, I was taking photos of some of the mermaid ones I had and messing around to do something artsy and the above self love, motivational image occurred. Be good to yourself.

Legless Mermaid promo videos

I have been making some simple self promo gifs/videos to use on social media and the web using the free version of Canva. Gotta say, it's easy and a lot of fun! This platform Blogger doesn't play well with videos, so here are some still shots of a couple I have made. The first one is order up; It's a photo from the kitchen of a local restaurant I work part time at. A still shot with "order up" fading in and out, and the background sound of a diner with people chatting and dishes clanking. The other is a stock video from the web of a vintage tv with static fuzz & background noise and the logo pops in and out from the bottom of the screen.

Power Play

So there was an art contest here in Detroit, for our beloved Red Wings. The theme was "Power Play". Big cash prize, winning art to be put in a corporate suite at the stadium, and so on, and so on...I'm not a big sports fan, but I know art and I need money! I've won big contests before thinking way outside the box and not doing what is obvious or expected. But this time it just didn't pan out, my art piece didn't even place. The winning art, it was good, but it was also what you would expect. But it's ok, actually doing this exercise grounded me, and taught me many lessons that I needed to be re-taught. 1. Think through your production process. I decided and visualized this in my head as very clean and graphic. So I used spray paint to create this, which needs masks. I was rushing and on a tight budget so I just told myself I would use paper prints and wing the offsets and overlaps of each color. I also haven't done this type of masking and painting in years, so I was rusty, the paper was too thin and buckled up when loaded with heavy paint, and I was way off on aligning colors to butt up cleanly. A lot of mistakes. 2. Know your audience. The judges were corporate executives and sports fans, they are not gonna overthink art or creative abstraction (think players on ice, local Detroit landmark icons). 3. Politics. Don't put a determined cartoon face on our logo, what is creative license? 4. Maybe they just didn't like it? Either way, I learned some lessons and will be a wiser artist the next time I enter a contest.

First pic is the digital concept. The second pic is the finished painted piece (24" x 30" spray paint and acrylic on wood panel). Third pic is some production shots.

Pillcandy

Not sure why I call this pill candy, should have been "walking with death" or something. More experimenting with styles, tight vectors with loose digital paint. I literally just threw this logo together without much thought just to get some vectors to play with, and I love it! funny how that sometimes just works. Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop.

Art dump...

It's been a few since I posted last, and I have done a few pieces that I have already posted to all my social media sites, hence the art dump. Lately I have been trying to just jump into starting something and work real loose. It started with the piece "why?" from the Feb. 7 post, using the oil brushes & tighter line brushes in Photoshop, and this has been the result from the last week or so. I think i'm trying to find the magic style that everyone will go "wow, great!" but, it's not happening. Putting your art on social media sucks, at least with me, where I'm at now, no response. Or if there is a response, it is completely different on different social platforms. But, truth be told, what I do know in my heart is, I will probably newer have a set "style". As stuff pops in my head to create, a way to do it forms as well; wether loose or tight, cartoonish or graphic, simple or complicated, my idea also creates the style I want to do the work in. I have to keep telling myself to do the art for "myself" and not anyone else. That's all that really matters.
